Prayer Plants (Calathea & Maranta) for Sale in Australia

Calathea and Maranta are two of the most recognisable genera within the prayer plant family. We focus on varieties with standout foliage—bold stripes, deep purples, and velvety greens—and all plants are either propagated in-house or sourced from trusted Australian growers.

Why Are Calathea and Maranta Called Prayer Plants?

The nickname "prayer plant" comes from the way their leaves fold upward at night, resembling hands in prayer. This movement—called nyctinasty—is triggered by changes in light and is especially noticeable in Maranta species. While Calatheas also move their leaves, the motion is often subtler and depends on the variety.

What’s the Difference Between Calathea and Maranta?

Calathea and Maranta are both part of the prayer plant family and share similar care needs. Marantas tend to have smaller, trailing growth and often show more dramatic leaf movement—folding up clearly at night. Calatheas are generally upright growers with larger, broader leaves and more striking variegation. Both types are suited to indoor growing when given the right humidity and light.

Are Prayer Plants Safe for Pets?

Yes. Calatheas and Marantas are non-toxic to cats and dogs, making them an excellent choice for pet-friendly households. They’re one of the few indoor plant groups that are both visually striking and pet safe.

When and How Do Prayer Plants Move?

Prayer plants like Maranta and some Calathea species fold their leaves upward at night and open them again during the day. This movement is driven by light and part of their natural circadian rhythm. It’s one of the features that makes them so fascinating to watch.

Are Calathea & Maranta Difficult to Care For?

Prayer plants can be more sensitive than beginner staples. They prefer filtered light, higher humidity, and consistent moisture—without soggy soil. They don’t like drying out completely. With a little routine, they settle in well.
