Pinguicula sp. ‘Mazatecas’ – Deep Maroon Butterwort
Pinguicula ‘Mazatecas’ is a striking species of butterwort, distinguished by its deep maroon leaves that intensify in colour with strong lighting. These small, carnivorous plants are both functional and ornamental, helping control fungus gnats while producing delicate purple flowers when mature.
The first two images show a mature specimen to illustrate the rich colour this species develops. The younger, sale-sized plants are lighter green with a maroon flush—this is typical of juvenile growth and will deepen over time with adequate light.
Key Care Notes
- Light: Bright indirect light is ideal. High light promotes the intense maroon colouring.
- Water: Bottom-water with room temperature water. Keep the growing medium moist but allow it to partially dry between waterings. Rainwater or tap water (if not overly hard) is fine.
- Medium: Grown in a perlite and sphagnum moss mix. Avoid fertiliser and standard potting soil.
- Humidity: Prefers higher humidity, but adapts to standard indoor levels if not too dry.
- Dormancy: May enter dormancy in winter. Leaves will reduce in size and lose their stickiness. We keep our plants warm to maintain carnivorous growth year-round.
What You’ll Receive
The sale plants are smaller juveniles with green-maroon foliage. Each will be shipped bare-rooted with its plastic pot and growing medium (perlite topped with sphagnum moss) included for easy repotting on arrival. This method protects the plant during transit.
We’ll also send a short video showing you how to pot your Pinguicula upon arrival.
