Philodendron Jose Buono – Rare Climbing Aroid with Striking Variegation

The Philodendron Jose Buono is a slow-growing climber native to the rainforests of Colombia. Known for its large, variegated leaves, this plant will thrive with something to climb, like a moss pole, and enough space to grow.

What to Expect

The plant you see in the photos is a representation of the one you will receive. These have been propagated from mature stem cuttings, which is why their leaves are larger than you’d typically see on a plant of the same size grown from seed or younger cuttings.

This batch is growing in a passive hydroponic setup and will be sent bare-rooted in sphagnum moss. Due to the size of the leaves, it's not practical to ship them in pots. If you’d prefer your plant potted in either perlite or soil, just leave a note at checkout and we’ll be happy to include a suitable pot and growing medium.

While we've sold this variety in soil before, we find it performs better in passive hydro. Philodendron Jose Buono tends to grow well in hydro, requires less maintenance, and is less prone to pests like spider mites. One of our home specimens is thriving in passive hydro—even in dry conditions right in front of the heater—with minimal care.

What Makes Philodendron Jose Buono Special?

  • Impressive Foliage: Large, leathery green leaves with creamy white variegation. Each leaf is different, making every plant unique.
  • Climbing Habit: Grows best when supported by a moss pole or other structure.

Care Instructions

  • Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Avoid harsh sun, which may damage the leaves or fade the variegation.
  • Watering: If potting into soil, use a free-draining aroid mix and water when the top few centimetres feel dry. If keeping in passive hydro, top up the reservoir regularly and flush out the growing medium every few weeks.
  • Humidity: Prefers above 60% RH but grows well in regular household humidity.

For a simple setup, we recommend pairing it in the Maxi Cubi Lechuza pot with PON substrate, which we’ve had great success with at home.

Shipping

This plant will be sent bare rooted, wrapped in sphagnum moss.

We ship plants every Monday to non-quarantine states. Please place your order before 2 pm on Sunday to ensure your plant is sent the following Monday. Orders placed after this time may not be shipped until the following week.

Orders to WA and TAS are shipped on selected dates only due to quarantine requirements. Orders for WA and TAS must be placed by 12 pm (midday) on the Friday before dispatch. Please see the list of WA and TAS shipping dates at the bottom of this page.

Shipping for plants to non-quarantine states is capped at $18.00 per order. Shipping for plants to WA and TAS is capped at $30.00 per order. We currently do not ship plants to NT.

Shipping costs include packing materials, labour, and certification where required. We use recycled packaging where possible to reduce waste and keep costs down, while ensuring all packing materials are sturdy enough to protect your plants during transit.

If no one is home to receive your order, the parcel will be left in a safe place. We do not request signature on delivery, as parcels returned to the post office may not be collected for several days, which can place additional stress on the plant(s) inside.

This plant can also be picked up from Northern Wellbeing Centre, 113C Miller Street, Epping VIC. If you select this option at checkout, we will email you to arrange a pickup time.

Current Growing Conditions

This plant has been propagated and grown in a hydroponics medium. All of our hydroponics plants are potted up in leca, perlite, or MAB grow, and left sitting in 1 - 2 cm of nutrient solution at all times. Our nutrient solution is made up of Growth Technology Foliage Focus or Complete Focus diluted to 5 ml per litre of water.

This plant is currently growing in our climate controled grow room. Temperatures sit abouve 20 C at all times, and relative humidity does not drop below 60%.

Suggested Care on Arrival

This plant will arrive with its roots wrapped in sphagnum moss. If you would like to continue growing this plant as we have, in a hydroponic medium, then we suggest you pot it up shortly after receiving it.

In general, we find that plants transition from hydroponics mediums to soil without any issues. However, if you want to transition the plant into soil with extra caution, then you can keep it in the moss for a few days. This will allow your plant to acclimate to your environment before transitioning to a new medium. You may need to re-moisten the moss during this time to prevent it from completely drying out.

When ready, you can pot the plant up in a well-draining soil mix. 50% premium potting mix and 50% perlite works well, but adding extra amendments such as orchid bark for extra drainage can help in creating an optimum soil mix. These extra amendments should especially be used for anthuriums, which require extra drainage. If you require more specific information about soil mix, please contact us.

If you require a growing pot and/or potting medium (soil or perlite) let us know in the notes section at check-out and we’ll send it with your bare rooted plant.
