Maranta Bicolour – Rare and Beautiful Prayer Plant

Are you a fan of Marantas? If so, the Maranta Bicolour is a must-have for your collection. This variety is slower growing and a bit fussier than others, similar to the Black Maranta, but it rewards you with its striking bicolour leaves. The plant you see in the images is a representation of the plant you will receive.

About the Genus: Maranta (Prayer Plant)

Maranta is a genus commonly known as 'prayer plants' due to their unique ability to fold their leaves upwards at night, resembling praying hands. These plants are also able to move their leaves throughout the day to adjust to light conditions, making them highly adaptable to various environments.

Light Sensitivity and Movement

The leaves of prayer plants like the Maranta Bicolour move throughout the day to receive optimal light. When grown under bright grow lights, the leaves angle downwards to avoid excess light exposure. In lower light conditions, they move upwards, angling towards available light. This unique ability allows them to thrive in diverse lighting conditions.

Care Instructions for Maranta Bicolour

To keep your Maranta Bicolour healthy and thriving, follow these care tips:

  • Humidity: Ideally, maintain humidity levels above 60%. However, they will cope in regular household humidity and can even tolerate the low humidity typical of heated homes in winter.
  • Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist but avoid waterlogging. The best way to manage moisture levels is to use a well-draining soil mix (50% perlite and 50% potting mix) and, if possible, a self-watering pot. Allowing the soil to dry out too much can lead to brown, crispy leaves.
  • Light: Marantas thrive in bright, indirect light but can also grow in lower light environments or with some direct morning sun. Their leaf movement helps them adapt to varying lighting conditions throughout the day.
  • Growing in Hydroponics: These plants can be grown in passive hydroponics, but due to their fine roots, converting from soil to hydro can be challenging. It's best to propagate a cutting, root it in water, and then transition the rooted cutting to a hydroponic setup.
  • Pest Resistance: Marantas are generally pest-free. However, their leaves may curl if they receive too much light, insufficient water, or suffer from root rot.
  • Leaf Browning: Browning at the tips of leaves can occur if the plant experiences poor airflow or inconsistent watering. To prevent this, ensure proper airflow and consider applying a fungicide such as Myclobutanil.

Non-Toxic and Pet-Friendly

The Maranta Bicolour is non-toxic, making it safe for homes with pets and children. Its beautiful, colourful foliage and adaptability make it a perfect addition to any home or plant collection.
